Birthday Salute: USS Arizona Survivor Louis Conter Turns 99

World War II Veteran And USS Arizona Survivor Lou Conter From Bob N.: “If you were not able to make the drive-by celebration for Mr. Lou Conter, I only hope you read the article in the Union paper. Just pulling up at Nevada Union high school to queue up for the tour by his house, was overwhelming. I had no idea the city had this many vehicles. The Police, Fire and Sheriff trucks, not to leave out the old cars of the Roamin Angles was incredible. Lou Conter was not just a…

GVDA Poker Cruise

Saturday, Oct. 3, 2020. We all had a great time at the “Car Poker Cruise” Saturday October 3rd. Some 40+ cars signed up to support downtown businesses by parking in town and exploring the 13 stops on the “cruise”. Because of those 40 car owner’s generosity, approximately $600 was raised to help Grass Valley’s Downtown Association support the town’s business activities. I was on site talking pictures and tried to anonymously watched the civilians stop at the various cars and check them out. Just like at “Cars and Coffee” and…

Things You Don’t See Everyday

I don’t know much about the photo, except a friend of my father named D.L. Brown saw it in the USS Arizona Museum sometime in the Late 70’s.  He immediately  recognized my dad, Richard Stopp, due to his hunched over shoulders.  My father always had that stance.  D.L.  mailed him a copy.  Later on, Dad received a US Navy copy, stamped on the back with the date, etc.  That one is unfortunately gone. No idea where it went.   I was with my dad when he got the package with…

Cars and Coffee

A few weeks ago at “Cars and Coffee”, Gary Apple and I were talking about his re-do of the red sports car many of you remember seeing during construction at an after breakfast tour. It’s now a hard top and no longer red as you can see (above). Gary’s talent is just amazing. One of the nice happenings at Cars and Coffee is that there are many families who drop by and cruise the cars in awe as they did at “Cruisin the Pines”. The kids love to see and…

Oops, Didn’t See That Comin’

Can you guess this (TBT) (throw-back Thursday) and guess whose Roamin Angel’s father got himself into a predicament is in this picture? Our heroine learned to drive a stick with this “Blue Leader” (name of the buggy) VW dune buggy.  Over 50 years ago, her family was at Glamis Sand Dunes in the Imperial Valley near the Salton Sea. Her Dad threw her the keys and gave her a shovel and told her to go and take her little sister with her and figure out how to drive a clutch….

Watch Out For Those Crazies

When the head of the local CHP office tells you “It’s been WACKO”….well…then I’m not crazy. Have you noticed an influx of over the top driving the last couple of months?  My travels almost every day take me up and down Dog Bar. I get on by the golf course and get off to finish my journey at McKnight then take the freeway to  Dorsey go up to Main, go right on Joerschke then left on Maltman to the shop. Dog Bar Is one lane in each direction, no passing…

Meet Some Women Of The Roamin Angels

The Union – Special Edition: Today’s Woman • October 18, 2001 • Story By Pam Jung • Submitted by Sylvia C. If you thought classic cars were more of a guy thing, there are at least 12 female members of the Roamin Angels Car Club who think differently. These women have their own vintage automobiles, which they maintain and drive and even helped restore. As to how they got interested in classic cars, most of the women say it was through their men folk. Once their interest was kindles, however, it quickly grew…
