Santa ‘photo-bombs’ the Roamin Angels Annual Christmas Party. About eighty Roamin Angels attended our Annual Roamin Angel Christmas Party at the Nevada City Elks Club in the evening of Saturday Dec 14, 2019.  We were entertained by Mister Illusion and music by Chris Crockett.  Lots of raffle prizes were given out.  Bill,  the Chef at Nevada City Elks, out did himself. I think everyone enjoyed their meal, with plenty leftovers to take home for another meal.  Our event Hostesses were Pat Bowman and Pam Dias – thank you ladies! You…

Roamin’ Angels History

Do You Know Your Roamin’ Angels History? Roamin Angels began in the 1960s. Like so many teenagers in the early ’60s, the future Roamin’ Angels were into hopping up their cars and drag-racing in the Grass Valley area. Long before Hollywood came up with the phrase, they felt “the need, the need for speed.” The stories of near misses with death in souped-up cars could make a book. Spare time was spent changing the engines, transmissions or rear ends of the teenagers’ cars to eke out a few more mph…

Lift That Engine

Lift That Engine…Have you ever wondered? A point pondered and drawn by Lanny N., 2007 Some of us occasionally have the need to lift an engine, possibly with the transmission attached. How often have do we use a lifting plate that attaches to the intake manifold by four 5/16th bolts? How about if that manifold is made of aluminum? Have you ever thought about just how much weight is riding on those four little bolts screwed into aluminum. I know I think about it every time I do it.  Well,…

A LeMans Heart

It was 1972 when Clare, a single woman at the time with a child, walked into a Richmond car dealership to buy a car that was priced right and that she could commute in. Seeing a 1967 Pontiac LeMans, she examined it, liked it, cut a deal, and drove away with it. Little did she know that the LeMans was in her life to stay and that it would, through sheer dint of time, become a classic. …Retired from a banking career, Clare has had the car restored with a…

Toy Drive 2019

The Roamin Angels take the motto ‘the show must go on’ very seriously…even in a blustery, cold, rain storm. The 30th Annual Roamin Angels Toy Drive happened on December 7th but it was anything other than ‘business as usual’. In the past, the club has had some pretty tricky weather for the toy drive – snow, wind, rain – but this time Mother Nature had plans of her own with almost a combination of all three.  The first set up at 8am set the pop-up tents flying with the wind…

Breakfast Report

At least once per year we make a visit to Gary Apple’s. We used to call it a garage but really it’s his ‘creative studio’. A group of us visited Gary and his ‘studio’ after a Friday breakfast get together. Through our previous visits, we’ve seen Rare vehicles recreated and re-envisioned all built entirely by just this one man in an absolutely amazingly short period of time. This last visit? Gary’s Father had a mid ’40’s Dodge Power wagon. The family used to go camping with it and it and they…

Back to the Late 50’s

Well my reminiscing time is just about over.  By 1958, many of us were back from the service, and had to have a new ride.  Seems like most of the young people were listening to Dina Shore.  ‘Cuz they was seeing the USA in a Chevrolet.  Part of the old gang came back and some just moved on somewhere else. Those who came back were “Mouse” Gregory, who traded his ’55 Stude for a ’57 Eldorado convertible. “Web” Pierce had a ’59 Bonneville convertible, Dick Morgan a ’59 black Buick…
