Thanks to all the Roamin Angels, Kiwanis Club members, Public and private entities and the interested “civilian” volunteers that helped stage Teen Safe Driving III. Special thanks to Brynda & Family who spoke about her brother’s death at the hands of a distracted driver. She brought the helmet he wore that day. Took guts. Took caring & love for her best friend.
What seems simple and straight forward to us like how to check oil (after discovering how to open a hood), tire changing, mirror adjustments, blind spots, well you name it, is not such a simple fact to a new driver. You just can’t imagine what it’s like to have a parent go out of their way just to say thanks for our efforts to keep their kids safe. To minimize what we went through waiting up late at night to hear our kids make it safely home.
The new additions were great this year. The Nevada County Department of Transportation set up a display outlining the location and type of accidents happening in the County (below, right). Hits home when you understand that it’s a road you use every day. Hits home when you understand their presence is a direct result of our efforts with Teen Safe Driving.
Debra D. helped Cal Trans make their presentations. Turns out Debra’s Dad retired from Cal Trans and was well known. Cal Trans will be at “Cruisin the Pines” in the 4×4 area with “The biggest, bad’est, HUGE 4×4 truck you’ve ever seen” their words….maybe even a CAT.
Lastly, a couple of conversations may lead to a senior version of what we do and there is potential interest from a very large corporation to take the STD program to a regional level.
