Bright Tail lights

Brighter Tail Lights When I was fixing up Colleen’s ‘56 Chevy, one of the things I wanted to do was make the stop/tail lights brighter. First, I washed the lens and cut out reflective rings for the housing. I used a 3m diamond grade sign reflective sheet scrap which really helped. (This is available at Highway Sign Shops). Second, I ordered #1157 “Brite Light” from one of the speed shops. These ‘babies’ are bright! (50/8 watt). Unfortunately, when all the lights were on and you hit the brakes, the thermo-breaker…

A Real Steal

While Jim R. didn’t physically steal his 1958 Buick Special, he did get it as the result of a crime. The second owner, who had bought it in  1959, had been in prison for a long stretch when his mother got tired of storing it in her garage and had made him sell it in 1989.  Jim saw the ad and went to see it. It had a 364 CID “nailhead” V-8 engine with a two-barrel carb and a Dynaflow auto trans. For options it had power steering and brakes,…

Roamin’ Angels History

Do You Know Your Roamin’ Angels History? Roamin Angels began in the 1960s. Like so many teenagers in the early ’60s, the future Roamin’ Angels were into hopping up their cars and drag-racing in the Grass Valley area. Long before Hollywood came up with the phrase, they felt “the need, the need for speed.” The stories of near misses with death in souped-up cars could make a book. Spare time was spent changing the engines, transmissions or rear ends of the teenagers’ cars to eke out a few more mph…

Lift That Engine

Lift That Engine…Have you ever wondered? A point pondered and drawn by Lanny N., 2007 Some of us occasionally have the need to lift an engine, possibly with the transmission attached. How often have do we use a lifting plate that attaches to the intake manifold by four 5/16th bolts? How about if that manifold is made of aluminum? Have you ever thought about just how much weight is riding on those four little bolts screwed into aluminum. I know I think about it every time I do it.  Well,…

A LeMans Heart

It was 1972 when Clare, a single woman at the time with a child, walked into a Richmond car dealership to buy a car that was priced right and that she could commute in. Back to the Late 50’s

Well my reminiscing time is just about over.  By 1958, many of us were back from the service, and had to have a new ride.  Seems like most of the young people were listening to Dina Shore.  ‘Cuz they was seeing the USA in a Chevrolet.  Part of the old gang came back and some just moved on somewhere else. Those who came back were “Mouse” Gregory, who traded his ’55 Stude for a ’57 Eldorado convertible. “Web” Pierce had a ’59 Bonneville convertible, Dick Morgan a ’59 black Buick…

Time Machine

As I observe our fast paced plastic world of gadgetry, I begin to realize my sanity is beginning to stretch its imagination to the breaking point to meet this high tech new millennium.  I am thankful I can still find radio stations that play Blues and 50s’ Rock and Roll music. So what does an old codger like me have to do to keep his mental normality and retain a wholesome out look on life? I slip away to my garage where hidden under a cover is my precious Time…

Back to the Mid 50’s

Back to the 50’s is a 3-part series by Ray Y.  Read Part 1: “Back To The Early 50’s“. Well to continue, by the mid 50’s times was a changin’, most of us had some sort of vehicle we were able to keep running. Regular gas was about $.21cents per gal. and Ethel was about $.25, and that was for 100-plus octane. By now most of us were hangin out at Charlie Sphans Texaco station. (He could fix anything). Besides his son Mike hung out with us. He was always makin…

Is your car heating up? Need a new radiator?

Which is better, a brass or an aluminum radiator? I had a discussion with a friend of mine recently because his car was overheating and he wanted to buy an aluminum radiator. Well, I don’t claim to be an expert on radiators but I know if you have 2 radiators exactly the same size, one brass and one aluminum, and everything is equal the brass radiator will dissipate more heat. The reason the factories use aluminum is that it is lighter and cheaper. When you are engineering a new car…

Is your speedometer accurate?
speedometer hooked up to a rev-counter

If your speedometer is mechanical and not electronic this should work to make it accurate. When I had my ’32 with the Hemi in it, the speedometer was way slow. Here is how I fixed it. First you have to disconnect the speedometer cable from the back of the speedometer. You need a rev-counter like the one shown in the picture or one similar that will work. You then hook the end of the speedometer cable to the spindle on the rev counter as shown in the picture. I used…
