My 1931 Ford Covid-19 Car

Terrible title for a story! But hang in there, it gets better. The story actually starts around the year 2011 or so. I found and purchased a 1931 Ford Model A 5-window coupe body. It had doors, trunk lid and misc. trim parts, but no frame or motor, glass, etc. With the help of Ray Yedding, I found a frame for a modest amount. Then I ran across a 1956 Oldsmobile. It was a 4 door, but complete and sort of ran. I paid only $200 for it. So now…

The Good Old Days

The Land Of The Very Old THE GOOD OLD DAYS I was sitting in our car outside of a local super market while my wife, Tina, went to pick up a prescription for me. As I watched an older woman direct a store employee to where her car was parked, another old couple were hanging on to each other looking for where their car was located. Behind them was a man I assumed was a retired soldier who only had only one leg. He had a guide dog who was…

An Early Hot Rod Story

I guess my love for hot rods started when I was in high school. I spent a lot of time doodling pictures of them when I should have been doing my schoolwork. When I was around sixteen I found a model A body that I bought for $10. I then found a frame that I paid $2 for. I had an old Oldsmobile engine that I had pieced together from several worn out motors. So I attempted to make my “dream” come true. Looking back, it was a mess. Although…

A Special Ingredient

Chris Mulder (a longtime Roamin Angel, who recently passed away) and I were making a pot of Chili for a Roamin Angels’ function, I think it was either a Grandpa’s Memorial at Ed and Nancy Johnson’s place or it could have been the Jack & Bill Garage Tour. Chris was watching over the chili when some of the ashes from his cigar fell into the pot. Well, I looked at him and smiled and just stirred them in. We called it Buzzard’s Breath Chili. That sounded like a good name…

Future Cool

I rarely watch racing from start to finish but Jean was out of town. settled in to watch F1 racing delayed and NASCAR live each featuring a couple of hometown kids. I remember Alexander Rossi in the shop with his Dad when they owned “BP landscapes”. Good family, nice kid, RA scholarship winner. There he is with a shot to become the first American to finish in the top 10 in F1 since some guy named Andretti. A thousand miles to the East of Austin, my Ex Neighbor is racing…

The Restoration Of Jeff Gordon’s First Two Sprint Cars

After finding a photo on the internet of Jeff Gordon and his 1985 Sprint car and seeing the write up on Roamin Angels’ website by Randy Kirkham about Jeff Gordon in April this year, I decided to try to contact Randy to possibly get some more photos of Jeff’s cars after seeing that he had crewed for him in the first days of his Sprint car racing. In doing so, I have been asked to share a story on the restoration of the two cars I own. Hi, I am…

Pontiac Project

It all started with Diane wanting something special for her 50th birthday in 2006. Having been bitten by the car bug after hanging around with Roamin Angels for 10 years, she decided she wanted a ’57 Pontiac like her parents had owned many years before. She found one in Maryland. Although she had pictures of the car from the owner and her cousin from New Jersey, she admitted that she paid far too much. Caught up with buyer’s frenzy and excited that it seemed the car she wanted, she bought…

What Goes ‘Round

What goes ’round…. About eight years ago I bought a 1961 VW from a neighbor. Dan had been on the Home Owners Board with me for about 6 years. I pestered Dan for a dozen years to sell me the Bug that sat in his field attracting snakes and leaves. “No, you don’t want that old thing Mike” was always the response. Early in 2012 Dan’s son came into the shop and we got to talking about the car. Turns out the Bug had been a project with Dan and…
