The morning was a little cool and we were all glad we brought a jacket or sweat shirt to wear.  But then the clouds went away and it was in the 80’s.  Perfect weather for a car show.   The Maxwell Car…

My First Real Car

With a little more time on my hands these days, partly due to the pandemic, I have been thinking of things long gone by. Some of my thoughts are about the many, many cars that have passed through my hands. I would have to start with the very first, which was a nice 1936 Chrysler coupe. It has a straight 8 engine with a floor mounted 3 speed and overdrive. I was only 14 1/2 years old, so I could not legally drive. But I convinced my dad that I…

Hot Rod, The Movie

A follow-up to Don and Gloria’s ’40 Ford story in the April 2021 issue. By Larry J. As it turns out, I was at Fremont drag strip when they filmed the movie. The “Hot Rod Willys” raced against an Olds Cutlass that was painted like a “laced Easter egg” (cool in the 70’s). The movie plot was kind of like a Western. The hero rides into a town that has a rich bad guy with a bad son. The bad guy has the Sheriff under his thumb. The bad son…

Cars and Coffee on Saturdays has several home growns as well. I’ve had the fortune in the last 6 months to meet another which is Retired Marine General Orlo Steele. The General is leading the effort to bring Grass Valley’s Memorial park and its’ memorials back up to good condition. Memorial park…

Our ’40 Ford(s)

We all remember our favorite car in high school and for Don it was the 1940 Ford coupe. Don’s best friend had a ’40 deluxe coupe and they spent many Friday nights cruising down Valley Boulevard in San Gabriel Valley, So Cal.  Luckily Don’s father got tired of driving his 47 Ford deluxe coupe and we were able to cruise Valley Blvd and go to the Starlight drive-in in Rosemead. After our marriage, we rented a small house in Alhambra.  One day in 1964, due to a detour, Don had…
