Veterans Day

WWII and Pearl Harbor survivor Lou Conter, 97, remembers when a 1,600 pound armor piercing bomb went through five decks of the USS Arizona, striking the store of 1,000,000 pounds of ammunition and sealing the fate of the ship he was assigned to on December 7, 1941.

"When that blew, the bow of the Arizona came up 40 feet out of the water, and settled back down," Conter said.
Conter — the keynote speaker of Sunday's Veterans Day ceremonies at the Grass Valley Veterans Memorial Building — captivated those in attendance with his war stories from his time serving in World War II, including the time he was shot down over enemy waters — twice — one of which included him having to punch sharks on the nose while awaiting rescue.

"It's silly for us to be spending money wondering if Russians cut into our elections," Conter said to the crowd toward the end of his speech. "In 1953, Russian divers cut into our cables to listen what we were doing in the defense department."

Sunday's ceremonies marked the 100th anniversary of Armistice Day — the end of World War I — which eventually was renamed Veterans Day.
